Hawaiian Legacy

This month Wild Boyz Photography's featured nonprofit is Hawaiian Legacy. Through their Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (HLRI), Hawaiian Legacy has planted 400,000 endemic trees over 1,200 acres in Hawaii. Their work attempts to remove some of the effects that man has wrought upon the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaiian Legacy was founded in 2014. The organization was started with the vision to develop a forest restoration model that could be applied to the islands of Hawaii. Donations to Hawaiian Legacy go directly to planting one of four native trees: King Koa, Royal Sandalwood, Monarch Milo, or 'Ohi'a Lehua.

Hawaiian Legacy's mission is to develop scientific, economic and ecologically sustainable models and practices that would:

  • Restore and improve the Hawaiian forest to what it once was.
  • Allow landowners to profitably establish and maintain permanent forest on these lands.
  • Protect and promote our native flora and fauna.
  • Maximize the ability to sequester carbon from our atmosphere.
  • Educate and entrain all who live and visit our islands the importance of caring for all our forest in all their forms.
  • Recharge our watersheds with more water.
  • Allow individuals and businesses an opportunity to become stakeholders of our environment through the planting of trees.
