Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii is a grassroots, local nonprofit run by a small team of dedicated staff and supported by passionate volunteers. The organization inspires local communities to care for their coastlines through fun, hands-on beach cleanups. In addition, they coordinate educational programs, team building corporate cleanups, waste diversion services, public awareness campaigns, and help others organize their own beach cleanups.

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii cleanups are immersive. The organization inspires participants to look deeper into the products they purchase and use on a daily basis.

In addition, they encourage them to become engaged members of a community dedicated to fostering positive change. They support the belief that we can stop plastic pollution by changing our consumption habits and demanding greater responsibility from the businesses that provide us with goods and services.

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii understands that beach cleanup represents one aspect of a broader solution. They aim to inspire better consumer behavior and continued coastal stewardship through cleanups, education, social media, and more.

From its inception, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii has removed 670,875 pounds of trash from Hawaii coastlines, provided environmental education to 45,068 children, organized 336 cleanup events, and engaged 42,980 volunteers in their mission.

Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii's Work

(Re)Learning

Sustainable Coastline Hawaii empowers people of all ages to take immediate action in their everyday lives to address plastic pollution and encourages people to get their friends, family, schools, and community involved. Their (Re)Learning program focuses on defining marine debris and explaining where it comes from, how it negatively affects people and our environment, and–most importantly–what we can do about it. It is solutions-based, interactive, and fun! Through storytelling and hands-on experiences, Sustainable Coastline Hawaii emphasizes the importance of our kuleana (responsibility) to mālama ‘āina (to care for our environment) and empowers people to become stewards of the land and ocean.

Sustainable Coastline Hawaii hosts about 10 large scale cleanup events each year. Large scale cleanups are hands-on and engaging community beach cleanups held across the islands. With a focus on fun and education, the goal is to take grass-roots action to inspire global change. Plastic pollution is an overwhelming issue and with the help of thousands of volunteers, over half a million pounds of debris have been removed from Hawaii coastlines.

Private and corporate cleanup programs offer a fun way to get outdoors with your team while creating an impact and lasting memories. These events go beyond cleaning – Sustainable Coastline Hawaii provides a hands-on, educational excursion that leaves the participants stoked and inspired, with the tools to keep the momentum going.
