Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation

This month Wild Boyz Photography is partnering with the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation. This 501(c)3 nonprofit was founded in 2001 by Jen Kennedy and Dianna Schulte and received nonprofit status in 2002. They came together to try to take the valuable insights of open ocean research and make it useful for the public. Their work spans from whale research to beach cleanups to education programs for students.

The Blue Ocean Society has led numerous initiatives around trash cleanup and waste reduction. To date they have cleaned up more than 23,000 pounds of trash through beach cleanups. Their Skip the Straw Project seeks to "educate, encourage and empower the Seacoast community to avoid single-use plastics, starting with plastic straws." 37 restaurants along the sea coast are currently participating in this program.

The Blue Ocean Society's mission is to protect marine life in the Gulf of Maine through research, education, and inspiring action.

The Blue Ocean Society's quantitative program results include the pounds of letter removed annually, the number of clients participating in educational programs, and pieces of litter removed annually. In 2014, they had a record year of participation in which they removed almost 100,000 pieces of litter through beach cleanups and had more than 50,000 clients join in educational programs.

The cleanup programs that the Blue Ocean Society organizes resonates with the team at Wild Boyz Photography. Matt has organized beach cleanups in Key Largo, and Ben brought together students to cleanup Griffy Lake in Bloomington, IN during his years at IU. This month we'll be inviting all our followers to join us in cleaning up the community, whether that's a beach, lakeshore, city park, or anywhere else around you. Follow along in this month's social media to find out more.
