Great River Greening

Great River Greening is an environmentally-focused nonprofit located in Minnesota. Originally founded in 1995 to help restore the downtown St. Paul riverfront, the organization now works throughout the Twin Cities metro area and neighboring communities to restore native landscapes. Some of its larger projects and initiatives include the conservation of urban and regional parks, partnerships with similar-minded companies focused on long-term ecological restoration, and youth activities to get young people active and involved.

Since 1995, Great River Greening has engaged volunteers on a large scale. With over 44,000 volunteers and 485,000 planted trees, grasses, and flowers across 20,000 acres in Minnesota, Great River Greening's reach is unmatched compared to other environmental nonprofits within the state. Urban and Regional Parks

Great River Greening works in partnership with a large variety of conservation partners throughout the Metro – municipalities, counties, non-governmental organizations, federal and state agencies, corporations and private landowners – to restore ecological health to critical natural areas, parks and open spaces, brownfields and neglected areas, and lakes and streams. Through two major conservation partnerships (Metro Big Rivers Partnership and Metro Conservation Corridors), Great River Greening secures resources to protect, restore and enhance priority habitat for wildlife and the public.

Great River Greening strives to develop effective, mutually-beneficial relationships with their partners to meet long-term ecological restoration needs. For all their partner relationships, Great River Greening utilizes its core competencies that distinguish them from other nonprofits: highly trained ecological staff, a dynamic community and youth involvement program; and a collaborative philosophy that includes no advocacy. In addition, they help to leverage funds from sources like the State of Minnesota Environmental Trust Fund and the Outdoor Heritage Fund. Those partnerships help to craft solutions to achieve their stated goals, often identifying financial resources to bring to the project, providing ecological expertise, and/or engaging the community when appropriate. Great River Greening has partnered with hundreds of public and private entities across Minnesota, forging long-term relationships and offering ecological and community assistance that will support their ongoing management through the years.

Youth Activities

Youth Activities

Great River Greening helps hundreds of young people every year become the stewards of tomorrow by providing opportunities for hands-on and immersive instruction. Field Learning For Teens is a service learning program focused on introducing and educating youth of color about environmental science, green jobs, and the role they can play in protecting and conserving our natural resources. Through field activities and team-building, youth learn about the role of technology and science in enjoying and improving the environment; acquire specific skills in the field activities; explore environmental science and technology careers; expand their horizons in seeking opportunities for further education and involvement.
