Mid Sound Fisheries

Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group works to involve local people in projects that will ensure a future for wild salmon. They know their communities are filled with the most innovative, determined and generous people around. They are part of the larger coordinated effort to restore fish in Washington. There are 14 other organizations that are part of the Regional Fisheries Coalition. Their base funding comes from a grant from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, a portion of state commercial and recreational fishing license fees, and excess egg and carcass sales administered by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Throughout the year they host events that allow people to learn about and volunteer in the restoration of the environment. This April they have two events. On April 2 Mid Sound Fisheries will be hosting an event to learn about and restore the environment. They will be spreading mulch, removing non-native invasive species, and planting native trees and shrubs. On April 16 they are hosting an Earth Day event. The Earth Day event will provide an opportunity for people to be a part of their community, to give back, and to meet new people.

Habitat Restoration

Habitat Restoration

Mid Sound Fisheries restores habitat in close partnership with others. They work with private and public landowners, community volunteers, construction contractors, engineers, tribes, nonprofits, and state and local funding organizations to design and construct a variety of projects. Some of them include:

  • Removing barriers so fish can freely pass up and downstream
  • Planting native trees and shrubs to cool streams, clean water, and provide wood for a healthy stream
  • Softening or pulling out bulkheads on beaches to increase the amount of plants and small fish young salmon need
  • Adding instream wood for better habitat and reduced erosion

Mid Sound Fisheries connects and empowers residents of all ages with hands-on experiences to help fish and other wildlife that share our communities. This can include:

  • Connecting youth to service learning opportunities at restoration sites, so they can learn about restoring habitat while getting their hands dirty;
  • Partnering with volunteer organizations and businesses on outreach days.
