Ocean Blue Project

July 2020

With the heat of summer setting in, we're featuring Ocean Blue Project as our non profit of the month. Ocean Blue Project is a grassroots environmental non profit that focuses on cleaning up oceans, rivers, and beaches for a healthier planet. Their vision is to see our One World Ocean, beaches and rivers be once again healthy and naturally beautiful ecosystems where wildlife, plants and humans can thrive alongside one another.

Ocean Blue Project was founded in 2012 in Newport, Oregon by father and son duo, Richard and Fleet Arterbury. To date they have removed 173,302 pounds of marine debris from beaches, rivers, and oceans. Ocean Blue Project has been enabling its mission by

– organizing and promoting beach and river cleanups,

– implementing sustainable measures to keep pollutants from entering waterways,

– mobilizing and educating local communities, landowners and governments,

– coaching youth into being the Ocean’s stewards of the future, and

– connecting people to their natural environments and improving biodiversity.

The mission of Ocean Blue Project is to rehabilitate and conserve the world's oceans, beaches, and rivers through

  • beach and river cleanups,
  • solutions to keep pollutants from entering ecosystems,
  • collaborative community-driven service learning projects, and
  • youth education.

Ocean Blue Project is designed as a grassroots organization. That means that there are many ways to volunteer and get involved. Of course donations are always appreciated. You can create a beach or river clean up. You can volunteer for either their tree planting or wildlife saving programs. Learn more about current opportunities here.

Blue Schools Project

Classroom Learning

The staff of Ocean Blue Project joins students either in the classroom or through an accessible online webinar format for grade level-appropriate inquiry-based discussion and activities focused on the connection between local watersheds and the ocean.

Stewardship Action Projects

Activities include planting of native species, cleaning up around drains and parking lots, cleaning up beaches, planting trees at the schools, or fundraising for a local Wildlife Enhancement Project.

Community Integration

Blue Schools Students and their parents can come together to take part in community events. This can be combined with stewardship action projects that can be scheduled to take place after school or on the weekends to make opportunities more available to entire families.

Synthesis

The synthesis segment provides a conclusion to the Blue Schools Program and an opportunity for student reflection.
