Ocean Defenders Alliance
This month we're featuring Ocean Defenders Alliance. ODA focuses on the issue of marine debris. They focus their efforts in Southern California and Hawaii. In each of these locations, they have teams and boats that are able to go out and remove debris from the ocean.
Ocean Defenders Alliance was founded in 2000 by Kurt Lieber to combat the large amounts of human debris and fishing waste that he was seeing on his dives around the globe. In 2002 ODA officially became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The group has led hundreds of divers on numerous cleanups, and they have removed tons of debris from the ocean.
The mission of Ocean Defenders Alliance is to clean and protect marine ecosystems through documentation, education, and meaningful action. Working with affected communities, we focus primarily on the reduction and removal of man-made debris which poses serious threats to ocean wildlife and habitats.
Beyond their work to cleanup the ocean, they also work to educate the public through presentations at public events. This resonates with us here at Wild Boyz Photography, as we are always looking to promote nature education. ODA also performs public outreach to fishermen, restaurants, and the seafood community.

- Giving educational presentations at schools, universities, and dive clubs.
- Sharing information at public gatherings such as expos, festivals, and conferences.
- Working to enlighten the seafood community, partner with them when possible, and garner their commitment to respecting our oceans.
- Reaching out via various methods and to spread the facts about the harmful effects of man-made pollution in our oceans—and how, together, we can reduce and work to eliminate them.
