Renewable Energy Alaska Project's Work

The following are a few of the many great initiatives promoted by Renewable Energy Alaska Project to reach its clean energy goals. REAP seeks to be imaginative, inclusive, and innovative in all of their work. For a full list of the REAP's initiatives, visit their official website by clicking here.

Alaska Network for Energy Education and Employment

Alaska Network for Energy Education and Employment (ANEEE) works to ensure that individual Alaskans can find access to the best clean energy learning, training and earning opportunities possible. REAP launched ANEEE in 2017 to identify, map and more deeply connect a network of Alaskans including schools, villages, municipalities, state and federal agencies, public and private organizations, Alaska Native corporations and non-profits, electric utilities, trades and individuals. ANEEE primarily works to increase the energy literacy of all Alaskans, develop clean energy career pathways and encourage higher learning that fosters a culture of clean energy innovation. It works in three broad sectors: K-12, Career and Technical Education (CTE), and University Instruction. ANEEE's work includes identifying and mapping existing energy education and university programs, analyzing gaps within these programs, fostering innovative collaboration to fill these gaps, cataloguing curriculum, and facilitating convenings amongst energy stakeholders. Renewable Energy Alaska Project advocates the use of modest amounts of government funding to leverage private financing for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects through what are known as “green banks.” These innovative finance institutions wring the risk out of clean energy lending for private banks, drawing them into loans they would not otherwise participate in. By offering credit enhancements such as loan-loss reserve accounts to private lenders, green banks are able to design loan programs with much lower interest rates and longer repayment periods, allowing borrowers to save more on their energy bills than their monthly loan payment. A green bank in Alaska would keep precious energy dollars in local communities, create jobs and make Alaska a more resilient place to live. STEM Education

Renewable Energy Alaska Project has a large focus on education. Ensuring that young Alaskans understand where energy comes from is a critical aspect of its operations, with over half of its staff dedicated to K-12 STEM education. Through energy education, REAP aims to build an appreciation of the implications of the energy decisions that individuals make every single day. REAP utilizes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lessons to teach K-12 students how energy is produced and used. STEM lessons also help develop real-world skills that can be used in future careers. In addition to REAP's educational programs, AKEnergySmart and Wind for Schools, they partner with other organizations to provide energy education lessons that are STEM-focused and include place-based and hands-on components.
