River Keepers

River Keepers' mission is to advocate for safe and sustainable use of the Red River of the North. Their core values are Education, Stewardship, and Leadership. They are dedicated to educating their community by increasing local watershed knowledge through active engagement. They are dedicated to taking care of their River environment and community relationships. They are dedicated to developing and influencing current and future leaders.

As they look to promote the Red River of the North, River Keepers has core activities that they partake in They advocate awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of the Red River. River Keepers encourages and promotes safe River usage. Their team encourages development of recreation amenities in the River corridor. They help to educate residents on the River environment. They seek to address safety concerns regarding the River corridor while assisting in providing cultural opportunities at the River's edge. All of this is while managing riverfront restoration projects.

River Keepers grew from a desire to rediscover the Red River’s heritage, and to teach people to again appreciate the “Red” as a living River. In earlier decades of Fargo-Moorhead history, people used and appreciated the Red River for a variety of activities. In later years, people lost that appreciation for the river, which is the dominant geographical feature in the community, and began to consider it a liability to be avoided. River Keepers was established in 1990 after a large community-wide assessment said that the Red River is underutilized, underappreciated and—in some cases—mistreated.

River Keepers Work 5

Groups pick up trash and enjoy a reach of the Red River or a local park. With individual actions, through Adopt-a-River/Park programs, many rivers that were once blemished have again become valued local resources. Cleanup crews may consist of a few friends or a large network of volunteers.

River Keepers educational activities are available to check out for free! Try them out with classrooms, clubs, organizations, etc. These include many different curricula covering topics like: aquatic invasive species, stream sense, water cycle, food webs, and more!
