TreeUtah
TreeUtah was the brainchild of a Salt Lake Tribune journalist, Pepper Provenzano, in 1988, and became a nonprofit in 1989. Since then, thousands of volunteers, staff, and board have stepped forward to nurture and grow the organization and its mission. We’re proud to lead a statewide effort to match volunteers up with projects to plant more trees in Utah!
To fulfill their mission, TreeUtah seeks to educate people about the environmental and social benefits that trees provide. Trees improve our quality of life in multiple ways. Trees renew our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. The amount of oxygen produced by one acre of trees equals the amount consumed by 18 people annually. Trees lower air temperatures by releasing water vapor through their leaves and shade trees can make buildings up to 20 degrees cooler. Trees also improve water quality by slowing and filtering rainwater, as well as protecting aquifers. These are just a few of the benefits that trees bring to our communities.
To ensure the health of natural ecosystems, their Ecological Restoration volunteers help plant thousands of native trees and woody perennials along riparian corridors like along the Jordan River. We also work on reforestation efforts on National Forest Service lands such as in Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons in Salt Lake County.
The mission of TreeUtah is to improve Utah’s quality of life for present and future generations by enhancing the environment through tree planting, stewardship, and education.

Community Tree Planting
TreeUtah plants large trees in public spaces throughout Utah including city parks and school playgrounds. This program works to build public awareness and understanding of the needs and values of healthy community urban forests.
TreeUtah is committed to restoring and preserving healthy ecosystems along Utah’s urbanized Wasatch Front. For over 30 years TreeUtah has organized plantings of thousands of native trees and shrubs along the Jordan River corridor and Wasatch Mountain Canyons. Maintaining the ecological health of waterways and open spaces is critical for sustaining wildlife habitat, as well as ensuring clean water, clean air, and the overall health of Salt Lake Valley residents. In addition, their restoration work builds civic involvement and a sense of community.

School Outreach
Throughout the calendar year, TreeUtah provides education and hands-on learning for all demographics, K-Higher Education. They engage with children of all ages. TreeUtah travels all over Salt Lake County bringing Discovering Trees to second-grade classrooms. They facilitate student-planted tree plantings at schoolyards across Utah. They also provide curriculum for after school programs and summer camps valley wide. In April, you can find them at Salt Lake City Libraries doing tree-themed story time.
TreeUtah’s Community Tree Planting grant program is designed to provide financial, logistical, and volunteer support for community tree planting projects outside the Wasatch Front. Because of scarce economic resources or limited access to tree resources and expertise, many people in Utah’s rural cities and towns find it difficult to plant trees each year. This program aims to help communities to plant trees on publicly accessible land with the help of local volunteers. In addition to awarded funds for purchasing trees, TreeUtah staff will physically participate and help community volunteers to plant the trees. Ultimately, this program serves to promote awareness and appreciation for the many social, environmental, and health benefits that trees provide.
