Wild Bird Fund

The Wild Bird Fund is a state and federally licensed 501(c)(3) nonprofit that rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned wildlife and releases them back to the wilds of New York City.

Each year, they rehabilitate more than 9,500 animals. Rehabilitation includes x-rays, diagnostic testing, surgery, medication, bandaging, splinting, physical therapy and special diets. They treat more than 180 species, from common house sparrows, pigeons and Eastern gray squirrels to rarities such as Virginia rails and snowy owls. This work is funded by donations and accomplished by an animal care staff of about 30 wildlife rehabilitators, who are aided by many dozens of volunteers.

The mission of Wild Bird Fund is to provide medical care and rehabilitation to native and passing migrant wildlife so that they can be released back into the wild. And to educate New Yorkers about the rich diversity of the city’s wildlife and how to help it thrive.

Wild Bird Fund's Work

Humane Education

Red-Tailed Hawk

Because 90% of the animals brought to us each year are directly or indirectly injured by human activity, they believe in educating our children by encouraging awareness, real-life observation, and hands-on learning. They strive to teach each student how they can coexist with and help New York City’s wildlife.

Their education programs work with NYC kids to inspire awareness, accountability, and action.

Classroom Visits

In this highly adaptable, one-time program, WBF staff and live bird ambassadors come into the classroom to introduce your students to NYC’s wildlife and the field of wildlife rehabilitation. Through interactive activities and games, they teach students about birds of NYC, the challenges they face, and the need for a wildlife rehabilitation hospital.

Most importantly, they generate ideas together about how each person can help make NYC a safe and comfortable place for birds and other wildlife.

Pigeon Academy

Many NYC kids are raised to see pigeons as an urban annoyance. However, pigeons are actually very intelligent and an important environmental indicator of a growing city. At the Wild Bird Fund, they love pigeons and know that much natural science can be learned by observing our most ubiquitous wild bird. While over 350 species of birds live in and travel through NYC each year, no bird is as familiar as the pigeon.

This monthly program uses pigeons to introduce students to urban wildlife and to teach individual environmental responsibility. Through hands-on activities, outdoor observations, and live bird ambassadors, they will explore fascinating pigeon traits, such as intelligence, behavior, and the family ties, that allow these common birds to thrive in our great city.
