Eastern fence lizards keeled scales are rough to the touch
This month our theme is “texture”, and I believe this lizard’s keeled scales exhibit our theme quite well. If you were quick enough to catch one of these lizards, you would find their keeled scales rough to the touch. These lizards are masters of camouflage. Not only are their colors identical to tree bark, but their texture is too.
Fun Fact: Male fence lizards are known to do pushups to attract mates.
Another Fun Fact: In certain parts of their territorial range, eastern fence lizards have adapted to have longer legs and specialized behaviors to help them elude the “red imported fire ant”. This ant (native to South America) can kill the eastern fence lizard in under a minute.
