At the northernmost edge of Keawakapu Beach
With this month's theme of light, I pored through the hundreds of sunrise and sunset photos that I have taken through the years. I absolutely love trying to capture the immense intensity of the sun while it is close to the horizon. The colorful light shows that are put on display are a true delight. This sunset at Keawakapu Beach was spectacular.
This photo in particular was taken while on my honeymoon with my lovely wife, Jill. We spent each evening watching the sunset over different parts of the island of Maui. This shot is actually from just outside the resort that we stayed at, Mana Kai Maui. Located in Kihei, Hawai'i on the island of Maui, it sits at the northernmost edge of Keawakapu Beach. Every night the setting sun would give us a different show of color and light.
Keawakapu Beach is oftentimes translated as the "forbidden cove". This may be due to the fact that this stretch of beach can be particularly susceptible to storms. The storms roll in and will take away large stretches of sand. The afternoons bring with it strong winds on a regular basis. This is likely one of the reasons that the beach has avoided an overpopulation of tourists, and it made it absolutely perfect for Jill and I to enjoy it in solitude on our honeymoon.
At the north end of Keawakapu Beach, there is a nice outcropping of reef that extends from the shore. We were able to partake in a number of snorkel adventures here and at the south end of the beach. We saw everything from sea turtles to eels and from humuhumunukunukuapua'a to sea urchins.

There was nothing forbidden about Keawakapu Beach
In my mind, there was nothing "forbidden" about Keawakapu Beach. Although it did get windy in the afternoon, it wasn't strong enough to keep you off the beach. In the ten days that we were there, the rain mostly stayed away. We would get the occasional late afternoon shower, but it seemed to rain more frequently to the south on Wailea Beach. We would absolutely return here.
The next time you take in a sunset, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed taking in the colors and light that were cast upon the sky above Keawakapu Beach. Whether the sky is red for "sailor's delight" or lighting the clouds in a pinkish or golden hue, sunsets can be absolutely magical in the colors they bring.
