This meant feeling the heat of the sun throughout the day
This photo was taken while on a hike in the east side of Saguaro National Park. The east side of the park has a trail called the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail. It spans 11 miles and proceeds slowly uphill from west to east. When we hiked the trail, we started late in the morning. This meant feeling the heat of the sun throughout the day. Given the trail’s lack of tall trees, we used the shade of a saguaro to find some relief from the sun during lunch.
Matt’s keen eye spied the moon just starting to come up over the horizon line of the trail. I quickly pointed my camera towards it and captured this amazing line. I particularly enjoy this photo because of how the shape of the moon matches the shape of the mountainside.
The Tanque Verde Ridge Trail in Saguaro National Park would have eventually taken us to the peak of Mica Mountain. This peak is the tallest in the Rincon Mountains. Mica Mountain proudly stands at an elevation of 8,668 feet. The second highest mountain within the range is Rincon Peak, which is 8,482 feet tall. Both are located within the east side of the park.
The temperature on the moon would have been more oppressive than the 90+ degree heat that we were experiencing that day. On the moon, the temperature can vary widely. During the day, temperatures have been recorded as high as 260 degrees Fahrenheit. At night, the temperature can drop as low as -243 degrees Fahrenheit on the moon.
