ReLeaf Michigan collaborates closely with each local community to ensure that each planting best improves the quality of life for residents
Despite the many challenges the pandemic presented this fall, ReLeaf Michigan safely worked with 19 communities throughout Michigan to plant 386 large trees throughout the state. These trees will provide huge benefits to the surrounding communities, more each year as they grow, capturing 361,622 gallons of stormwater runoff and sequestering 256,444 pounds of Co2 over the next 25 years. They've also continued conducting educational presentations to communities about properly caring and valuing their trees, moving to an online format.
ReLeaf Michigan collaborates closely with each local community to ensure that each planting best improves the quality of life for residents, providing the technical guidance and expertise to ensure each community's needs are met. Of the many plantings completed this fall, ReLeaf Michigan is especially proud of the recent planting in the North End neighborhood of Detroit, done in cooperation with the Vanguard Development Center.
The trees were planted in a community park that had fallen into disrepair and is currently being renovated to encourage recreation. Detroit's North End neighborhood has a rich history, including the childhood homes of Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Ross. The renovated park adjacent to Vanguard Development Center is being renamed Black Bottom Park in tribute to Detroit's historic black neighborhood, which thrived in the early 20th century but was demolished in the '60s for freeway development. The park will bring the City of Detroit closer to its goal of having a park within a 10-minute walk of every resident.
Also, collaborating on the Black Bottom Park project were members of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center within the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture, plus financial support from the DTE Energy Foundation. Volunteers planting trees were a combination of residents, business owners in the area, and others excited to see the area thrive. ReLeaf Michigan is proud to work with Michigan communities to make a healthier and greener state, one tree at a time.
