There are extensive grasses in the park, but in the winter, they are golden in color.
I took this photo of a sunset at Green Mountain Park while out for a hike with Landon, my dog, one Wednesday afternoon in January. Green Mountain Park is found in the town of Lakewood, Colorado. One of the great things about living in and around Denver is that an amazing hike and scenery are oftentimes just a short drive away. This park was within 30 minutes of where I was living, which meant that even on a day that I was working, I was able to hop into my truck and make it to the trailhead in time for a wonderful hike before sunset.
Green Mountain Park is interesting in the fact that it is not green at all in the winter. There are very few trees within the park, and the ones that are there are short and wind shorn. There are extensive grasses in the park, but in the winter, they are golden in color. Since this photo was taken in January, my confusion at the park’s name is understandable. During the spring and summer, this park is vibrant with the grasses and wildflowers that grow there. Some of the wildflowers that can be found there include: Western spiderwort, mariposa lilies, yucca, blanket flower, and prickly poppy
This photo was taken near the 6,854 foot summit of the park. Many animals can be found within the boundaries of this park. Elk, antelope, prairie dogs, coyotes, hawks, rattlesnakes, rabbits, deer, and mountain lions are all inhabitants of the park from time to time. Although I didn’t see any animals outside of a few birds during my hike, I greatly enjoyed the uniqueness of this park.
From the top, I could turn to the east and see Denver, and I could turn to the west and see the towering mountains of the Rockies. This mountain would be a great place to hike if you are acclimatizing to the elevation of Colorado, or if you want to do an easier hike before heading into the Rockies.
