I rented an ocean kayak on my honeymoon
I love to go out on the water in an ocean kayak. It all started when my family would vacation in Florida. I saw that there were kayak rentals, and I began to ask for that as my birthday present (as my birthday was always right before we left for Florida). One year my parents got me a kayak rental, and from then on I was hooked. I spent one summer living in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida interning for a kayak rental and tour guide company there. Now whenever I am close to a body of water, I want to explore it in a kayak.
I took this photo while Jill and I were on our honeymoon in Hawai'i. I had rented this ocean kayak from the rental shop that was connected to our hotel, and I carried it out to the water to take it for a spin. Now I had to be careful as I took the ocean kayak out, as there were coral reefs close to the beach in front of our hotel. How deep something is under the water can be deceiving when sitting atop a kayak, so I made sure to take a wide berth around any reefs.
I decided that I wanted to take the kayak to the north. There were a few beaches there, and I could see people surfing. One thing that I really like to do is take an ocean kayak surfing. You can typically catch more waves than a surfboard can. As long as the water is deep enough, it is a great thrill to feel the momentum of the wave carrying you along.
I turned around after paddling a bit to see this photo opening up behind me. The volcano that formed the eastern half of Maui and that houses Haleakala National Park was enshrouded in a layer of clouds. The sun was shining, and everything was a deep and rich blue. Looking back over the land, I was glad that I had rented this ocean kayak. It can provide a perspective that is otherwise missed. The thing that sticks out the most in my memory is the blue. It was such an incredibly deep and pure shade of blue. I hope this photo helps to capture that.
