House sparrows, like some other birds, use “grit” in their diets
This is one of the most widely distributed birds in the world. It is native to the Middle East. It can also be found in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa, and Australia. Some of this distribution is from natural migration and some of it is due to deliberate introduction.
These birds are familiar to many people because of their widespread distribution and their proximity to human habitation. House sparrows live in areas people live in and they tend to avoid the extreme environments. These small birds will eat a variety of seeds, buds, berries, insects (beetles and caterpillars), and fruits (grapes and cherries). In urban settings, house sparrows will scavenge trash cans. House sparrows, like some other birds, use “grit” in their diets. Grit is a hard substance like stone or shell. This grit helps the house sparrows digest some of their harder foods.
House sparrows are considered social birds. They form flocks, sing in groups, and congregate at bird baths. House sparrows will do both water bathing and dust bathing in groups. These birds will often roost in groups. Each morning and evening are filled with chatter.
House sparrows compete for nesting territory in the same areas as bluebirds, which we are also featuring this month. House sparrows also enjoy the protective cavities of trees. They will nest in the eaves of houses for this same protection (hence the name). House sparrows often take abandoned nests from other birds. They have also been known to steal active nests by driving away other birds.

These baby house sparrows will remain in the nest for roughly 15 days
The amount of eggs laid by the females is determined by environmental factors, the age of the female, and the number of other competing individuals. The egg clutch size usually ranges from four to ten eggs depending on the factors mentioned. House sparrows will typically have two to seven egg clutches per year. The closer the bird lives to the tropics, the more clutches they will lay.
Females will incubate the eggs in the nest for about two weeks. The eggs typically hatch at the same time. These baby house sparrows will remain in the nest for roughly 15 days. The mom and dad will feed their young during this time. After about four days, the baby house sparrows will open their eyes for the first time.
