The beetles were taking full advantage of [the prickly pear flowers]
This photo was taken at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas. These beetles are feeding on a prickly pear flower. The prickly pear were in full bloom, and the beetles were taking full advantage of one of their main food sources being open for business.
These beetles were photographed when I was out collecting bees with my brother, Nick. You can learn more about why we were collecting bees in the post about the Hairstreak Juniper. As best as my identification skills will allow me, I estimate that these are Kern's Flower Scarabs, which are also known as Plains Bumble Scarabs. This species of beetle is common to the South Central United States and the Northeast portion of Mexico.
