The third most common tree in Maine is eastern white pine
I believe Maine to be the most picturesque state on the east coast. With our theme of “Trees” this month, the vast forests of Maine are a great place to feature. Maine has 55 species of trees (as of 2017). It is estimated there are ~24 billion trees (at least one inch in diameter) in Maine.
So, what are the most popular types of trees in Maine? In terms of volume, the answer would be red spruce. The second most common tree in Maine is red maple. The third most common tree in Maine is eastern white pine, which is the tall tree pictured in this photo.
Eastern white pines can live to over 400 years old. In fact, there are some in Michigan and Wisconsin that were dated to approximately 500 years old! However, most of the eastern white pines we see across north-central and north-eastern North America are much younger. This is due to widespread logging operations, dating back to the 18th century. In fact, it is estimated that only one percent of old growth forests are still in existence.
I like this photo because of the way the eastern white pine is silhouetted amongst a sea of birch trees, with the backdrop of a winding brook. The funny part about this photo is that I do not remember exactly where in Maine I took it. In a way, that shows how many beautiful areas there are in this state.
