Makahiku Falls is a beautiful waterfall located on the island of Maui in Hawaii. Standing at approximately 200 feet tall, this cascade of water is a sight to behold. Located in the lush and verdant rainforests of Maui, Makahiku Falls is a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike. The falls are easily accessible via a short, well-marked hiking trail called the Pipiwai Trail. The trail is approximately 4 miles round trip and leads to the stunning 400-foot-tall Waimoku Falls. This trail begins at the end of the Hana Highway. This hike is located in the coastal portion of Haleakala National Park.
As you make your way along the trail, you'll be surrounded by the rich and vibrant flora of the rainforest. The trail is relatively flat and easy to navigate for the first mile as you make it to the Makahiku Falls, making it suitable for people of all ages and abilities. If you want to continue on to the other falls, the trail does get steeper.
Once you reach the falls, you'll be treated to a stunning view of the cascading water. The falls are quite powerful and create a refreshing mist that you can feel from a distance. The land around Makahiku Falls is quite dangerous, and there are many signs encouraging you to stay back as there is a steep drop into a ravine between the trail and these falls.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can also explore the surrounding area. You can continue along the Pipiwai trail for another 1.5 miles, which leads to another beautiful waterfall. The trail can be a bit more challenging, but the views are well worth the effort. Along the way to Waimoku Falls, you’ll get to pass through a bamboo forest that has taken over one section of the trail. In total, this hike will be a total of four miles and can take between two and five hours to complete for most hikers.
