Notice the school of juvenile fish in the mantle of the moon jelly
This month our theme is “light”. What you are looking at is a moon jellyfish, with the sun in the background. These jellyfish are common throughout the Caribbean and South Florida. If you look closely, you will notice a school of juvenile fish that have taken up refuge in the mantle of this jellyfish.
Fun Fact: Ocean sunfish (Mola mola) and sea turtles love to eat moon jellyfish.
Another Fun Fact: Moon jellyfish do not have gills or lungs. They “breathe” by diffusing oxygen from the water, using a thin membrane they have that covers their body.
