This hike was a constant uphill grade
It took a twelve mile out-and-back hike to get this view, but it was well worth it. Jill and I made our way up Mount Cammerer via the Low Gap and Appalachian Trails. This hike was a constant uphill grade from miles 1 to 6. Although unrelenting, it allowed you to get in a rhythm and take in the scenery.
At the top of Mount Cammerer is a lookout tower. The lookout tower was built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was used to look for fires in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. It was restored in 1996, and it can be accessed by the public throughout the year.
I took this photo looking south from the tower over the Appalachian Trail and the mountains that it winds through in North Carolina. I love the cascading colors of green that you see in the mountains as the layers fade into the distance. The land there is wild, and I enjoy going there year after year for Labor Day weekend.
