Tides can be as much as 12 feet
This photo was taken along the rocky coastline of Acadia National Park. Acadia National Park is located roughly two-thirds of the way north along Maine’s coast. It is a unique place. It is the only area along the United States eastern seaboard that has shear cliffs.
The extreme tides in this part of the world also make Acadia a special place. Tides can be as much as 12 feet. The coastline changes dramatically between high and low tide. I recommend going on a low tide that is on its way up. There is only one way to drive in and it is called Park Loop Road. I believe this photo was taken near the small parking lot near Thunder Hole.
What is Thunder Hole? Thunder Hole is a unique geological formation along the southeast coastline of Mount Desert Island (the island that houses Acadia National Park). If you get to Thunder Hole roughly an hour or two before high tide, you will see why they call it Thunder Hole. The incoming rising tide rushes into the narrow channel and as the air escapes between waves it creates a thunderous reverberation. As waves come ashore, water can shoot as high as 40 feet in the air!

I enjoy shooting black and white landscape photography. I’ve written about this before, but I still feel it necessary to mention the work of Clyde Butcher. Acadia provides a plethora of opportunity for black and white landscape photography. The extreme tidal variation provides a dynamic ever-changing view of the coastline. As you can see in this photo, low tide provides you access to areas you otherwise would not be able to shoot photos. The black and white medium works well with this cool foggy day.
