The roots of a one-seed juniper can reach as far as 200 feet below the surface
This is a one seed juniper tree (also called a cherrystone juniper). These trees grow 6-21 feet tall. As the name suggests, there is a single seed within the juniper’s cone. Although rarely there can be two or three seeds within the juniper’s cone. These are popular edibles for birds and small mammals. Squirrels, foxes, quail, chipmunks, and deer all partake in the berrylike cones.
So, what makes this tree special?
These trees have incredible root structures. In fact, the roots can reach as far as 200 feet below the surface. The only tree with deeper roots is the shepherd’s tree.
This photo was taken at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If you haven’t explored Garden of the Gods, it is well worth the trip.
I enjoy this specific tree photo for a few reasons. One of the reasons is the unique trunk shape of this one-seed juniper. It reminds me of one of those palm tree over the water photos. Except instead of water, it is all red rock.
