I was on a liveaboard dive board off the coast of Catalina Island
This was my first “west coast” sunrise photo. This photo was taken from the top deck of the boat I was on. I was on a liveaboard dive boat out in the Channel Islands National Park, off the coast of southern California. We were anchored up at Catalina Island on this morning. Just as the first sunlight was appearing, I put on my wide-angle lens and headed for the top deck. Waves rocked the boat, and admittedly there were some failed attempts to get this photo. Finally, I was able to time out the wave movement, shutter speed, and horizon, to get the shot.
On this dive trip, we had explored San Nicolas, Santa Barbara, Catalina Island, and the Eureka oil rig. As you may be able to make out in this photo, Catalina Island is a very rocky island. This holds true above and below water. Catalina Island is about 22 miles long by 8 miles wide (at its greatest width). This sunrise was the start to a great day of diving.
Fun Fact: Did you know over 4000 people live on Catalina Island?
Another Fun Fact: Did you know the Chicago Cubs trained on Catalina Island from 1921 to 1951?
