These are hardy spiders
This is a tiger wolf spider! I spotted him on a poison sumac plant on Macinac Island. Macinac Island is a small island in northern Lake Heron. It is located near where the upper peninsula meets the rest of Michigan. These cryptic spiders can be found across the Eastern United States, Canada, and Mexico. They are seen as far west as Nebraska.
As the name implies, these are hardy spiders. The females will even survive the brutally cold winters and live for up to two years. The males typically do not. This is because the female tiger wolf spiders sometimes eat their male lovers after breeding. This is also the case with the furrow orb weaver which we are featuring this month. This is referred to as “sexual cannibalism”. This typically happens if the female spider is larger than the male spider. Scientists have found that the larger this difference in size between the male and the female, the more likely the chance for the smaller male to be cannibalized.
Although I came across this tiger wolf spider in the day, they are actually nocturnal. Tiger wolf spiders will hunt a variety of small prey such as beetles, cockroaches, and crickets. Tiger wolf spiders are not aggressive; however, they are venomous. Tiger wolf spiders inject venom into their prey when they bite them. Humans do not have to worry if they get bit by a tiger wolf spider. A bite may cause a little swelling and minor pain, but it will not be a life-threatening situation.
The plant that the tiger wolf spider is on is called poison sumac. It is similar to poison ivy, but it is more of a small tree, growing to a max height of ~20’. Like poison ivy, poison sumac contains urushiol. Urushiol is an oily concoction of organic compounds that have allergic properties. Although this does not bother the spider, these oils would cause a very severe allergic reaction for humans.

- The tiger wolf spider is known for its excellent eyesight, especially at night. They use this evolutionary advantage to hunt their prey, rather than building webs to trap their prey.
- Female tiger wolf spiders will grow to be larger than male tiger wolf spiders.
- The tiger wolf spider is also commonly known as the wetland giant wolf spider.
- Macinac Island State Park encompasses more than 80% of Macinac Island.
