These black gum trees are more than 400 years old!
I took this photo in J. Maynard Miller Town Forest, located in southern Vermont. On this day I was searching for black gum trees. These trees are common south of the Mason Dixon line, but not common all the way up in Vermont. Some of these black gum trees in Vernon are more than 400 years old. After a day in the forest, I was hiking back and took this photo as the late day sunlight silhouetted the trees.
Fun Fact: Black gum trees can reach heights of more than 100 feet!
Another Fun Fact: Black gum trees will actually decay from the top down. As they age, they will become shorter.
