We soon found ourselves in a rainforest wonderland
When Jill and I were traveling on the Road to Hana, the Wailua Iki Falls were a fun detour. We started by following the directions of going up the hill on the trail and following it to the right. We stayed on this trail for maybe 50 yards when suddenly it went straight down hill and become a mudslide. It was at this point that we realized that we had gone the wrong way.
Upon returning to our last juncture in the trail, we decided to proceed forward for a bit. We didn’t see any obvious right turns, and we were about ready to pack it in. We knew we had a long day ahead of us. I decided as a last ditch effort to run up the trail. With my backpack flopping behind me, I quickly ran into a couple in their 60s that was casually walking towards me. They let me know that the falls were just up the road through a gate. I ran back to get Jill, and we soon found ourselves in a rainforest wonderland.
The falls in Wailua valleys originate far up in Haleakalā. By the time they made it down to where we were seeing them, they were being diverted by the East Maui Irrigation Company. They manage much of the water fall on this side of Maui. This photo was one of my first real attempts at photographing water with a slow shutter speed. I hope you enjoy the results!
