I was out on a "blackwater night dive"
Capturing a flash of lightning in a photo can be pretty challenging, even in Florida (the state with the most lightning strikes every year, ~1.45 million strikes). This photo was taken about 5 miles offshore of West Palm Beach, Florida. I was out on a “blackwater night dive”. Roughly an hour into our dive the weather kicked up. The gin clear 400’ deep ocean was flashing like a disco ball from the lightning above. The captain gave the diver recall sign (banging on the metal dive ladder with a lead dive weight).
When I surfaced near the back of the boat, I saw the boat get illuminated by a large bolt of lightning. Seeing an opportunity for a wild photo, I lifted my camera out of the water, kicked up, and squeezed the shutter button 3 times. I only had time for these 3 shots before having to board the boat. They were essentially blind luck shots. When I got back onto the boat, I looked at my photos. This was the third shot.
